He currently lives in Asheville, NC's urban area, after having lived in Florida (through 1994), the Southern Appalachians (1994—2014), and Oregon's Pacific Coast (2014—2019). Jim Hargan has been providing high-quality photography and photo/text packages to the travel publishing industry since 1994.
Jim was the sole photographer for Fodor's/Random House's Compass American Guide to North Carolina, which went through five editions from 1998 to 2009.
He is both writer and photographer for a travel guide to The Blue Ridge & Smoky Mountains for W.W. Norton's Countryman Press imprint (now in its fourth edition since 2002), and has produced a companion volume, a guide to the Shenandoah Valley and the Mountains of the Virginias, published in 2005. In 2011 he completed a third guide for Countryman Press, North Carolina.
In addition, he wrote and photographed The Photographer's Guide to the Blue Ridge Parkway, and Photographing the Great Smoky Mountains, both from Countryman Press.
Jim has been a regular contributor to British Heritage magazine, to date having provided 78 photo/text packages of historic travel in Great Britain. He has also sold articles to Country Extra magazine, Relaxation magazine, and Travel the Heart of Britain, a Japanese magazine.
